The Super 20 Trophy is one half of a tournament that is known as the Women’s Super Series. It is the domestic limited overs tournament of Ireland which features Super 20 Trophy as a T20 competition and Super 50 Cup as the One Day International competition.
The tournament was played as a combined 50-over and 20-over tournament between 2015 to 2020. In 2021, the Women’s Super Series split it’s competitions into two separate tournaments. This article details the features of the Super 20 Trophy.
The tournament is played between three teams that comprise of Irish female cricketers from different regions of the country. The three teams are Dragons, Scorchers, and Typhoons. All matches are played by adhering to the T20 rules and regulations set by the International Cricket Council for women’s cricket.
Each team plays the other twice in a round-robin format. A notable feature of this event is that three days of the tournament features double-headers. This means each team has to go through a phase where they have to play two matches on the same day.
A team gets four points for winning a match, two points for a shared result or tie, and zero points for losing a match. Additionally, a team gets 1 bonus points if their run rate is 1.25 times more than the opposing team.
When the tournament was played in a combined format till 2021, Dragons were the most successful side, having won three titles. The Scorchers had won two titles during this phase. After the Women’s Super Series was split into two separate events, each edition of the Super 20 Trophy has been won by Scorchers.
