The Swiss Open is a professional badminton tournament held annually in March. It is a part of the Badminton World Federation’s Super 300 series of tournaments. The 70-year-old tournament is held in Basel’s St. Jakobshalle arena. It is organized by Swiss Badminton with sanction from the Badminton World Federation.
The tournament features competitions in men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles disciplines. Each competition is held in a knockout draw format. The draws feature 32 players or pairs. Eight of these players or pairs are seeded based on their rankings before the tournament.
The winner of the tournament gets 7000 points. The runner-up and semifinalist get 5950 and 4900 points respectively. The tournament has a prize pool of $210,000. The champions in singles and doubles get $15,750 and $16,590 respectively.
Chen Jin and Lin Dan are tied for the most men’s singles titles (three each). The men’s doubles titles has been won thrice each by Chai Biao, Hong Wei, Koon Kienn Keat, and Par Gunnar-Jonsson. The women’s singles title has been won a record six times by Liselotte Blumer. June Jacques on the other hand has the most women’s doubles titles, with four to her name. The record for the most mixed doubles titles belongs to the South Korean team of Kim Dong-moon and Ra Kyung-min, who have won the title thrice.
The best performing players at the Swiss Open are Danish. 55 Danes have won a title at the tournament. The next best side is China, whose players have won titles 52 times.
