What is the Thailand Masters in badminton?

The Thailand Masters is a Super 300 professional badminton tournament of the Badminton World Federation Tour. The first edition of the tournament was held in 2016. The tournament commenced to commemorate and honor Princess Sirivannavari who was a former badminton professional. Thus it is also known as Princess Sirivannavari Thailand Masters 2024. It is held in the Nimibutr Stadium in Bangkok.

The tournament features men’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s singles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles events. The singles events feature 32 players in the knockout draw. The doubles events comprise of 32 pairs in the draw. Matches are played as best of three sets. A player wins a set when they win 21 points with a difference of two points. If the score reaches 20-20, then the set continues until one of the player gets a lead of two points.

As a Super 300 event, the winners of the tournament get 7000 points. The runner-up and semifinalist get 5950 and 4900 points respectively. The total prize money that the tournament has to offer is $210,000. The winners of the singles and doubles events get $15,750 and $16,590 respectively.

As of 2024, except in women’s doubles, no player has won a title at Thailand Masters more than once. The duo of Chen Qingchen and Jian Yifan has won the women’s doubles titles twice. Qingchen has also one mixed doubles title to her name. China and Thailand are the most successful nations with nine titles each. The next best performance is by Indonesia who has won five titles.
