Why is the Women’s European Cricket Championships special?

The Women’s European Cricket Championship is a T10 league of women’s cricket played among European countries. The women’s format of the tournament began in 2023. The event is not officially sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and is governed by European Cricket.

The tournament’s first edition was held in Spain. In one week, the five participating nations compete in 23 scheduled matches. The tournament features a double round-robin format, where each team competes against the other twice.  A team gets four points for winning a match. No points are deducted in case of a loss. If a match is drawn, both teams get one point apiece.

The top four teams in the league stage then advance to the play-offs. The table toppers directly qualify for the final. Teams positioned third and fourth at the end of the league stage play an eliminator. The winner plays the second place team for a spot in the final.

Each is played in the T10 format, wherein one innings lasts for 10 overs. One match is completed within 90 minutes. Owing to the short and quick nature of the format, multiple matches are held on each day. Even the knockout rounds can be completed in a single day.

A bowler can bowl no more than two overs in a match. In case the match ends in a tie, a golden ball decides the outcome of the match.

England XI won the inaugural edition of the tournament. The 2024 edition will feature a total of 10 teams. All matches of the tournament are broadcast live on the European Cricket Network’s official YouTube channel.
